Diabetes if untreated could lead to life threatening health problems. It could lead to diabetic neuropathy with damage of nerves that would cause pain and numbness in the feet, legs and hands and lead to limb amputation in serious cases. Diabetic retinopathy or severe damage to the retina in the caused by high and uncontrolled blood glucose levels could also lead to partial or permanent blindness.

In addition diabetic nephropathy caused by the high blood sugar could affect the kidney with buildup of protein in the urine, swelling in the leg, frequent urination and intense itching. This could ultimately lead to renal failure or survival with dialysis or kidney transplant. Heart disease and stroke caused by prolonged high levels of blood glucose flowing through the bloodstream could cause devastating results that could lead to serious consequences like heart attack, paralysis, memory loss, coma and slurred or delayed speech.
